Ethical Aspects of Contemporary Lactation Practice Course

Consistent with the IBLCE Code of Professional Practice (CPC) #1, analyze ethical dimensions of promoting, protecting, and supporting breastfeeding.

Objectives

  • Given a scenario about a mother who is asking the IBCLC to lie about an issue, determine what steps could/should be used for ethical decision-making.
  • Given a scenario where a new mother is giving her baby up for adoption, identify whether the problem is an ethical dilemma, ethical distress, or locus of authority issues.
  • Given a scenario where two lesbian mothers wish to feed a new baby, recognize the potential strong and weak rationales for ethical decision-making in that situation.
  • Discuss the use of off-label drugs for lactating clients in terms of their characteristics, considerations, legality, and governing principles.
  • Recognize the presence of and possible strategies to deal with conflict of interest in research as well as clinical situations.
  • Identify at least 5 strategies that IBCLCs have used to help resolve ethical dilemmas.
